VACUUM TECHNOLOGY GOES TO THE NEXT LEVEL WITH LIMBLOGIC VS

Reliable and controllable vacuum suspension that doesn’t require external tubing to the socket or bulky mounting have been a need of both prosthetists and amputees since vacuum was first introduced in the prosthetic industry. Ohio Willow Wood’s remote-controlled LimbLogic VS meets, as well as exceeds, these needs for vacuum suspension.

Key features and benefits of LimbLogic VS are its easy inline mounting in a prosthesis, ’set & forget’ intelligent monitoring of vacuum pressure, remote control operation, water resistant controller, and quiet operation. These product characteristics were primary objectives for Ohio Willow Wood when developing this evolution of vacuum suspension.

“We were approached with the idea of developing an integrated electronic vacuum system by Wil Haines of MaxCare Bionics. Because vacuum suspension has so much to offer in regards to security and comfort, we enthusiastically agreed to work with Wil to develop an improved system that could benefit a wide range of amputees.” said Jim Colvin, Director of Engineering at Ohio Willow Wood. “With that in mind it was essential in our research and development to create a system that would be applicable to more amputees through a product height of less the 1.5” and offer easy operation by prosthetists as well as amputees.”

The system’s vacuum pressure is adjustable from 0 to 20 in–Hg. Practitioners can use a default vacuum level or can program the LimbLogic VS Controller with vacuum settings that best meets their individual patients’ needs. Using the system’s small, handheld fob, amputees may then adjust the level of vacuum as needed to best suit their activities. Once the desired vacuum level is set, LimbLogic VS will monitor the amount of vacuum pressure in the socket and maintain a secure and comfortable suspension of the prosthesis. This ’set and forget’ technology allows users to maintain the proper amount of vacuum without the need to continually adjust their system…the Controller will simply run when needed.

“In our clinical testing of LimbLogic VS, patients have experienced increased security, a more intimate fit of their prostheses, more comfort, and a great sense of their prosthetic leg,” shared Jeff Denune, Clinical Director of Prosthetics at Ohio Willow Wood. “We’ve repeatedly heard from our test patients that with LimbLogic VS their prosthetic legs feel as close to their natural legs since becoming amputees.”

For best results, Ohio Willow Wood advises the use of an airtight, well-fitting total surface bearing socket with LimbLogic VS in conjunction with a reflected Alpha® MAX Liner or an Alpha DESIGN® Liner with MAX fabric and the new Alpha Flex Sleeve for a gel–on–gel seal. This combination should deliver an airtight prosthesis for optimum vacuum operation. Should a prosthesis lose its vacuum seal, LimbLogic VS has a smart leak detection feature. This feature will notify users of a leak in the vacuum seal via the LimbLogic VS Fob and will limit pump operation. A LimbLogic VS diagnostic kit is available to aid practitioners in identifying the location of leaks quickly and easily.

The new Alpha Flex Sleeve was designed for use with LimbLogic VS, but can be used with pin or suction suspension as well. This new sleeve uses a highly flexible fabric which provides greater comfort, flexibility and increased range of motion. A derivative of the Alpha gel is used in the Alpha Flex Sleeve. While the Alpha Flex Sleeve gel contains mineral oil and has the skin–friendly characteristics of Alpha gel, it has tested to be more puncture and abrasion resistant than the original Alpha gel. Another unique feature of the sleeve is a contoured polyurethane pad on the interior fabric cuff. The pad covers the typical socket brim and helps improve longevity by reducing damage to the sleeve at the brim line.

LimbLogic VS is competitively priced and comes with a 24–month warranty. The patient weight limit is 350 pounds for U.S. Activity Levels 1–3 and 300 pounds for U.S. Activity Level 4. The suggested L–Codes for LimbLogic VS are L–5781, or L–5782, and L–7368.
